Jointly offered through the UW Schools of Nursing and Medicine, the certificate is ideal for professionals looking for specialty training to join a palliative care team, become a palliative care champion within their current clinical role, be a change agent within their organization or simply want to improve connection with their patients.
This track is designed for the bedside nurse, who is empowered to advocate for her patient during an interprofessional team meeting or to co-create an agenda with a family in crisis. This track is designed for children’s hospital social workers- who are master communicators- and report that this training took their career to the next level. This track is designed for the specialist- nephrologist, cardiologist or oncologist- who knows that listening carefully and guiding a family to articulate their goals when time is short is the best medicine. This track is designed for early career trailblazers who intuitively get it, for mid-career nurses and APPs who want to integrate patient-centered care into their practice, and for seasoned providers who have witnessed the ways in which the healthcare system can fail a family who isn’t well prepared for their ending.
Faculty
Our Pediatric Track Faculty represent nationally-recognized leaders in palliative care and palliative education. They are VitalTalk trained nurses, NPs, social workers and physicians partnering with students to grow their skills in communication during serious illness.
Program & Workshops
The program is 9 months, taught over 3 academic quarters. Each quarter, focuses on a key area of palliative care practice: person-centered communication, interprofessional team training and program development/systems integration. The curriculum is delivered using interactive self-directed modules, monthly live interactive webinars, recorded lectures, reflective writing and clinical skills practice.
Each quarter features a 3-day virtual workshop. The Fall & Winter workshops are build upon a foundation of VitalTalk® simulation-based training, with several innovative features including TeamTalk: advanced communication skills for interprofessional teams. The Spring workshop uses principles of design thinking to develop a pitch for a palliative care project in education, process improvement or program development.
